In Australia, they are trying to catch them young, A fully vegan preschool which is all set to open at Barnsley in New South Wales aims to teach kids the value of plant-based whole foods.

Sustainable Play Preschool will offer only plant-based meals to children. The meals and snacks will be dietician-approved and made fresh, daily onsite by their chef.

Not just that. The preschool will also encourage children to see and engage with the entire life cycle of their food “from planting seeds in the garden, helping prepare veggies for lunch to watching the leftovers compost into soil, children can develop new skills, while learning about science and nature from growing their own fresh produce”.

The food will include morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and late snack. Among dozens of dishes on the menu are berry chia pot with soy milk; baked tofu mac’n’cheez with broccoli, cauliflower and mushrooms; chickpea ‘tuna’ sandwich on wholemeal bread; wholemeal wrap with hummus and grated carrot; and pumpkin seed basil spinach pesto on wholemeal pasta with steamed greens, tomatoes and lettuce.

“We understand that many families are going to have a preference to include non-plant-based foods in their children’s diets. What families decide to feed their children at home is completely their decision. We’ve decided to be a 100% plant-based service and have ensured the food we will provide is nutritionally balanced, fresh and fun,” the preschool says.

Children often grow up on global food systems and learn about healthy and whole foods very late in life. Sustainable Play Preschool is trying to correct that.

“We envision a future where children develop the skills to be self-sufficient and less reliant on inefficient and detrimental global food systems. Most importantly, for children to develop an appreciation for good, whole foods from the earth that fuels and nourishes their bodies. Involving children in the life cycle of their food encourages them to establish lifelong healthy eating habits,” it says.
