Mass protests in Hong Kong have thrown up an interesting video that has come to define the conduct of protesters who have braved rubber bullets and tear gas to demand withdrawal of the Fugitives Bill that would allow extraditions to mainland China. Currently, under “one country, two systems” model being followed after the UK handed over Hong Kong to China in 1997, Hong Kong is not required by law to extradite the accused to China. People fear that the new law would also cause repatriation of critics of the Chinese government.

The video from the Sunday protest, which emerged on social media and went viral, shows an ambulance entering a sea of millions of protesters who neatly make way for it. The ambulance had come to take an injured protester to hospital. It suddenly appeared outside the Wan Chai police station, sirens blaring and lights flashing. and immediately a clearing was made for it. Soon the sea of protesters started parting to make way for the ambulance while closing the gap in its wake, the scene that evoked the comparison with parting of the sea.

A local person on social media described the scene as Moses parting the Red Sea. He said that ther scene proved the protesters were no thugs:

網上見到的視頻,巨量的人群如摩西過紅海一般,讓路給救護車。香港人不是暴徒。 pic.twitter.com/hZZzYGjgun

Hong Kong is quieter now after Chief Executive Carrie Lam apologised for the bill and indefinitely suspended it. But protests may not die down unless the bill is retracted, especially after the protesters impressed the world with their behaviour and won global support.
